Yes they will go into rut. This may surprise you as it did me. Just one of those facts of life in the autumn, when the days start getting shorter. Who doesn't love that bucky smell? I will tell you our does don't seem to mind. :)
If the bucks don't run with the herd a buddy is very beneficial. :0 Goats are herd animals and are happiest with another goat and often times other livestock will be a warranted substitute. My miniature horse likes spending time with the boys! They seem to like her company too. :) It is a good practice not to share a buck fence line with the does. It is hard on the boys and I have even heard they can do the deed right through the fence! We separate the junior bucklings from mom at around 12 weeks. Weaning time is not much fun but if done gradually it is not half bad. Diet is important. Our adult bucks seldom get grain and only as a treat. Fresh clean water is essential. Warm water is appreciated in the colder months. Enjoy those boys as they are half your herd! |
